JA 84, Winter 2012
Content
This issue reflects on the notable projects of 2011. In general, the works reveal an increasingdiversity of functions and a widening variety of scales. Contemporary concerns are illustratedin the numerous renovations and temporary projects produced by architects. On the otherhand, new landscapes generated through art, nature, and a variety of contextual conditionsdemonstrate alternative possibilities to architecture.
Then the Great East Japan Earthquake struck on March 11.
People involved in the fieldof architecture were forced to reflect on what could be done, and to ask how architecturecould contribute.
For this issue, architectural responses to the earthquake are presented alongside current affairs ina linear timeline. The ideas and efforts by architects to improve the city are also introduced.Moving forward, it is important that architects continue to engage in the recovery process.
As rebuilding takes shape, the questions that confront the profession are immense. Yet itwould not be an understatement to say that noble efforts to answer these questions havethe potential to improve the world.
