Since 1974, Helmut Jahn has designed more than 55 buildings, including arenas, libraries, courts, exhibition halls, garages, gymnasiums, corporate headquarters, convention centers, police offices, boards of trade, hospitals, transit stations, statte centers, airline terminals, and hotels. All these buildings are posited in the urban context in terms of their functions and formations. By this he can be said to be an architect concerned with the townscape or the city-structure. He has very often built work on the street corner and in the plaza, sites to draw attention of many people. To respond, he invented his own style, vocabulary and detail.
Helmut Jahn, born in Nuremburg in 1940, is unmistakably an American architect. He studied at IIT under Mies van der Rohe after graduating from Munich Technical University in 1965 and joined C.F. Murphy as assistant to Gene Summers. This fact means that he grew up and begun his architectural career under the influence of Miesian style, vocabulary, and detail. Like Mies, Jahn clearly expresses a structural system in his work, a trabeated system of column, beam, spandrel, glass window, and mullion. Materials like steel, aluminum, and glass form component units in order to be industrialized. Natural materials are never applied and decorative elements are not used in his work. Colouration is only a manifestation of structural system. In his work, all parts are integral to the whole as structural components. As a result, his work always looks monolithic and phallic in its context. In other words, it visualises a digital way of designing in terms of manifesting structure and dimension. This is why he always makes sketches with dimensions arranging the building in proportion of rooms and dimensions of columns and components. He never applies an analog way of designing. Therefore, his sketches can be faxed to anywhere in the world. Mies, mediated a space to universalise architecture, but Jahn mediates architecture by digitizing space.
