Spanning from the Asuka Period to the 21st Century, this special Shinkenchiku re-issue is a visual history depicting Japanese architecture from the perspective of “space.” Focusing on photography as a communicative medium, this book allows readers to draw relationships between 100 architectural projects and the eras that produced them.

It is often said that architecture does not “grow on its own,” and that it reflects human will and varying combinations of the cultural, political, economic—and that which is simply personal. It is also true that architectural expressions in space, the result of all this human activity and its underlying values, are not something that can neatly be confined to a particular age.

With this in mind, we present this accumulation of Japanese spatial expressions to encourage the creation of new histories for us to contemplate. Beyond being visually provocative, this special book also contains a chronological catalogue of technical drawings to supplement any investigations.
