a+u 2025:11 Feature: Christ & Gantenbein – 10 Years
Content
a+u’s November issue looks at the continuity, disruption, and evolution in the works of Christ & Gantenbein from their first monograph published in 2015. Constraints in site and program are welcome opportunities to create spatial surprises. Through experimentations in the museum typology, such as the extension of the Swiss National Museum, the architects’ practice a form of urban repair, creating architectural spaces that are part of the civicness of a city, grounded in context, accessible to the public, and provide much needed “third spaces.” As evidenced by Vaugirard Social Housing, their typological approach goes beyond recreating basic functions but provides sensitive solutions to contemporary spatial issues in domestic architecture. One defining feature of their work over the years continues to be in consistent dialogue, with contemporary collaborators, historical figures, architectural concepts and with time itself. (a+u)
