a+u 2018:07 Aires Mateus
Content
This issue of a+u is our first monograph dedicated to Aires Mateus, an architectural practice run by two brothers, Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus based in Lisbon, Portugal. Over the last thirty years, Aires Mateus has gained international
recognition for their poetic, yet respectful contemporary reinterpretation of Portuguese architectural tradition.
Although their projects have increased in scale, they have kept by their belief in paying careful attention to details and constantly exploring through experiments on ways to innovate with light and form. They play with the idea of timelessness, but work to keep this idea of permanence in their design. This conscientious articulation of their spaces to capture time is present not only in those newly built projects, but even more so visible in their preservation projects working with the traces of the past.
