Now widely-recognized, the mass production of lightweight and pre-fabricated building materials through industrial processes dramatically affected how we use and understand the built environment. In the period following the Second World War in Europe, a time of devastating loss for the region’s social, economic, and built fabrics, architects and planners across the continent worked with these processes to rebuild the region’s cities, supply desperately needed housing, and address complex systems of cultural heritage.
This special issue, a companion to American Architecture 1945–1970 Beginning of the Modern Architecture, features works to highlight the synthesis between Modernism and varying types of architectural contexts and traditions that preceded it, using Europe’s Mid-century internalization of the movement as a complex, historical case study.
