Utzon, Fehn and Now – Architecture in Denmark and Norway

Two master architects of the 20th century passed away in2008 and 2009: Danish architect Jørn Utzon (1918–2008), who designed the Sydney Opera House (1973), a World Heritage Site; and Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn (1924–2009), who designed the Nordic Pavilion, Venice Biennale (1962). Both are considered legitimate successors of the Scandinavian modernists. This issue features their last works in the opening pages of the issue. Kim Utzon talks about his collaboration with his father on the Utzon Center, completed after Jørn Utzon’s death. Thomas McQuillan writes on Sverre Fehn and Fehn’s influence, based on interviews with three young Norwegian architects.

This issue also introduces recent architectural projects inDenmark and Norway with two essays: “Transformation ofthe Copenhagen Harbor” and “Norwegian Architecture –Between the Poetic and the Politic”. How has the tradition of Scandinavian architecture evolved in these two countries after Utzon and Fehn? (
