Sustainable Architecture in Germany
All over the world, sustainability and the environment areaffecting decisions made by businesses and consumers every day. In no field is this more evident than in architecture, where environmental advances can have a significant impact on energy consumption. Many of these advances originated in Germany, a country known for its progressive approach to the environment and for its willingness to tackle issues of sustainability head on.This issue introduces new approaches to sustainability inGermany, with a focus on recent projects by Christoph Ingenhoven and the HafenCity urban redevelopment project in Hamburg. The work of Ingenhoven Architects is characterized by the use of modern technology to take maximum advantage of the resources provided by nature. HafenCity is notable for the way that it incorporates sustainability as a central theme in a large-scale redevelopment. The ideas in these projects allow us to rediscover something we knew long ago – that wind, sun, and rain are bountiful resources that should be used instead of wasted.Essay: Architecture in Germany – The Present is Green
