Dwelling and the Land
This issue features dwellings that are premised on specialrelationships to their sites and to nature. Each of them stands as a quiet witness to the changing patterns of the seasons, embracing the site and blending into the landscape. These houses incorporate the distinctive characteristics of their local environments, allowing their residents to feel the light of the sun and the breath of the wind. From the descriptions and drawings, it is clear that the architects have thought long and deeply about how to respond to all of these elements.Instead of concentrating on a particular region, this issueintroduces residences from all over the world. Differences in culture, climate, and surroundings are evident, along with responses to specific requests from the residents. But at the same time these new dwellings are informed by a global perspective on the issues facing architecture today. For this issue, the Canadian architect Brigitte Shim hascontributed an essay on the relationship between architecture and the landscape.Essay: Nature, Culture of the Local
