First published in August 1925. Since its inaugural issue Shinkenchiku – New Architecture – has been endorsed by innumerable architects for its detailed presentation of contemporary Japanese architecture with high quality photos, plans and drawings. Over time the journal has developed a unique perspective, constantly communicating new trends in architectural thought and design. The activities of architects have expanded in recent years to encompass urban development, the environment and a host of other fields. Architects are increasingly making contributions to society in the broad sense by exploring the possibilities of modernity through architectural expression. The journal will continue to carefully consider such developments and visually convey the potential of architecture with photos taken and published by our Photography Department.

au-magazine.com/shop/subscription/shinkenchiku

Play is rarely a priority in urban design, a matter highlighted by the photo essay Tracing Van Eyck, which notes that of the 700 playgrounds Aldo van Eyck designed for Amsterdam in the aftermath of World War II, fewer than 20 remain. Projects such as Nami Play Pavilion demonstrate how quick flexible solutions can enhance large-scale residential projects, while projects such as GiganteBlu activate urban heritage to foster lively new experiences. Variety in material is an important factor in the built environment, as evidenced by Pod for Happiness, which uses locally sourced material to create an embracing form that reflects the ongoing vitality of the local community, juxtaposed with Boulder Park, which uses 3D printing technology to experiment with organic morphology. Projects such as Rita Lee Park breathe new life into legacy projects that are at risk of falling into disrepair, while projects such as Color Pit are actions of urban repair. Spaces for play thus emerge as invitations for the imaginations of not only the children who will use them, but also for the designers and builders entrusted with their creation.

Tracing Van Eyck
studio dmau

GiganteBlu
expandstudio

Rocks on Wheels
Mike Hewson

School Models
Florian Graf

Essay:
Emergent Play
Sara Brunelle

Harvard Yard Childcare Center Play Study
G2 Collaborative

Nami Play Pavilion
Nami Nami Studio

Creatures
ertepl

Pod for Happiness
Craft Narrative

Boulder Park
XISUI Design

Playground Landscape
Hidalgo Nuñez Architects

Transformation of a Wastewater Treatment Plant into a Playground
En-Dehors

Color Pit
Etienne Bastormagi, Sandra Richani, Nada Borgi

Fresnillo Playground
Rozana Montiel, Alin V. Published monthly starting in May 1986. Every issue of Jutakutokushu – Special Housing – introduces and interprets ten or more houses with beautiful photography and detailed plans. The houses are approached as vehicles for architectural insight, proposals for new ways of living and showcases for various techniques and technologies. From the start the journal has striven to meet the professional needs of residential designers and architects while also appealing to the interests of a broader readership. Jutakutokushu will continue to straightforwardly communicate the diverse values of the house as a class of architecture intimately linked to day-to-day living.

au-magazine.com/shop/subscription/jutakutokushu

Laurent Didier, Mathieu Le Ny, and Louis Léger have structured a worker-owned cooperative to pursue a research-based approach to architecture. Instead of asserting a singular vision across the board, they inform each project with site-specific decisions and structural logic. Engaging with modest programs, including the refurbishment projects M47 and E53, BAST carves out new spaces while preserving the integrity of the local vernacular building. New constructions, such as M37, present new methods to connect with the site. The 18 projects presented in this issue focus not only on the finished building, but also on the dynamism of the construction site, where constant calibrations take place between human, site, and material.

M48 Maison / House
M44 Maison / House
M32 Maison / House
E69 Équipement / Public Space

Essay:
Building Practice
Adrien Comte and Adrien Meuwly

A12 Appartement / Apartment
A13 Appartement / Apartment
E53 Équipement / Public Space
E56 Équipement / Public Space
L33 Logement / Collective Housing
L35 Logement / Collective Housing

Conversation:
BAST and Guillermo Fernández-Abascal

M37 Maison / House
M38 Maison / House
M39 Maison / House
M43 Maison / House
M45 Maison / House
M47 Maison / House

Workshop:
O04 / W04 – Teaching Experiences

T18 Tertiaire / Tertiary Space
T19 Tertiaire / Tertiary Space

Announcement: The 61st Central Glass International Architectural
Design Competition (2026)

au-magazine.com/shop/architecture-and-urbanism/au-202604

As seen in the 10 houses and 12 cultural buildings examined here, Phifer’s work engages with the landscape in a manner that is deeply respectful, yet asserts its presence. Whether situated in a pastoral meadow or an urban setting, the buildings do not dominate their surroundings but strike a balance. This contextually sensitive dialogue between building and landscape extends beyond formal expression of the building to its environmental performance. In the operable sunshades in Taghkanic House, the thick concrete eaves overhanging the ephemeral walls of Hudson Valley House III, and the complexly multilayered canopy of Moody Amphitheater, the quiet contemplative quality of Phifer’s work emerges from a scientific understanding of site, climate, and light.

Essay:
The Poetics of Light: From Landscape to Space of Contemplation
Susana Ventura

Ghent House
Hudson Valley House III
Hudson Valley House II
Hudson Valley House I
Elizaville House
Madison House
Fishers Island House
Midwest House
Salt Point House
Taghkanic House

Essay:
Through the Lens of Glenstone
Thomas Phifer

Glenstone Museum
Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw
TR Warszawa Theater 108
National Archaeological Museum of Greece
Moody Amphitheater
Corning Museum of Glass
North Carolina Museum of Art
Museum of Art and Cultural Center
Rice University Brochstein Pavilion
Wagner Park Pavilion
United States Courthouse
Cine Colombia Headquarters

au-magazine.com/shop/architecture-and-urbanism/au-202602

From its earliest projects, the Beijing-based firm has prioritized the relationship of built work to its site, from ocean, to mountains, to the heart of the city, while investigating both natural and artificial landmarks for clues on how best to address the unique requirements of each program. While Gong Dong is no stranger to bold gestures, as evidenced by Seashore Chapel in Qinhuangdao, recent work, such as Jingyang Camphor Court in Jingdezhen, seems to retreat from view, knitting itself into the urban fabric until structure and surroundings become inseverable. While material continues to be critical to their capture and play of light, Vector Architects’ resolution to preserve nature, such as their decision to make 18-meter trees the nucleus of Liyuan Primary School in Shenzhen, attests to their ability to grasp the genius loci of their site. In their words, theirs is “a cultural, typological approach” toward architecture in search of the “marvelous” – a pursuit captured in their unique method of precisely photographed, meticulously made models and remarkably drawn “music box” axonometric drawings. The firm’s meditations on architectural form are so rational that they loop into the surreal, a paradox apparent in the 19 works presented in this issue. On the one hand, in House for a Collector, the hierarchy of built walls is challenged by movable furniture to define space. On the other hand, in Chris Marker Residence, cookie-cutter coherence is discarded in favor of self-generated rationality informed by program, site, the color of the sky, and other applicable systems. Notably, Experience imagines housing not as a mechanical repetition of units but as a system of heterogeneous parts akin to a living organism. Across their projects, music emerges as a persistent theme, as the architects draw from the languages of art and music, translating rhythm, variation, and counterpoint into spatial form. Constraints in site and program are welcome opportunities to create spatial surprises. Through experimentations in the museum typology, such as the extension of the Swiss National Museum, the architects’ practice a form of urban repair, creating architectural spaces that are part of the civicness of a city, grounded in context, accessible to the public, and provide much needed “third spaces.” As evidenced by Vaugirard Social Housing, their typological approach goes beyond recreating basic functions but provides sensitive solutions to contemporary spatial issues in domestic architecture. One defining feature of their work over the years continues to be in consistent dialogue, with contemporary collaborators, historical figures, architectural concepts and with time itself. Active since the late 1960s, Alvaro Siza continues to build across different regions of the world, and each work of architecture reflects consciousness of the collective values of a place. This sensitivity is evident in different scales and material used, such as Clay Pavilion in Mexico, which recalls traditional construction techniques, and Renovation of the Manor Dos Magalhães, which sculpturally integrates new landscaped terraces with the critical function of the building, yet makes no unnecessary changes to the façade of the ruin. In addition to 16 recent works, architect and writer Nuno Grande composes a “poem to Porto,” which highlights 5 of the most influential projects by Alvaro Siza in his beloved city.

English + Japanese / 192 Pages / 219 x 292 mm / 500 g

Paper Edition
Amazon US
This September issue features the Italian structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi (1891–1979). In his lifetime, Nervi gained worldwide fame as one of the 20th century’s greatest creators of structural architectures, and his body of work, including his lesser-known projects, continues to affirm his remarkable contribution to his field.
Nervi was called upon to conceive works characterized by large spaces and to explore material possibilities, structure, technicality, economy, aesthetic expression, workability, and functionality. While these key concerns sometimes yielded contradictions, his aptitude for finding the ideal “compromise” where everything works was among his natural talents. Optimal compromises often lead to meek end points, but Nervi possessed the ability to create works of outstanding surprise, which is what made Nervi “the Nervi.” Notably, this skill was not an accident, but the result of his repeated experiments and deliberation.
Despite Nervi’s fame, upon his death and the subsequent unexpected closure of his office, many of his drawings were divided up and stored in a scattered way. Unfortunately, for a time Nervi was, in a sense, forgotten as posthumous criticism from prominent Italian voices curtailed open discussion of his work. Nervi was “rediscovered” in the early 1990s, and his significant legacy has reemerged today thanks to numerous research efforts, such as the seminal archival studies by Claudio Greco; the conservation activities of my fellow guest editor for this publication, Francesco Romeo; and the actions of the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Foundation. This issue’s review of Nervi’s projects not only reflects this rediscovery but also offers a comprehensive overview of his ideas and work.
As with much of modern architecture, Nervi’s works present us with the challenge of preservation. The examples of preservation and utilization presented in Irene Matteini’s essay show that preservation is our way to the future. Saikaku Toyokawa’s essay clarifies Nervi’s influence on Kenzo Tange and how Tange evaluated Nervi, while the essay by William F. Baker, a prominent structural engineer for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), brings his professional perspective to Nervi’s work and philosophy.Together, the essays bring the multidimensional facets of Pier Luigi Nervi’s oeuvre into greater focus.

Yoko Fukuda-Noennig
Guest Editor

Essay: Nervi’s Timeless Philosophy
William F. The 20 works presented here showcase the evolution of their methodology and philosophy toward the concatenation of painting and architecture. Playing with the limits of the architectural surface through explorations in geometry, Pezo von Ellrichshausen invite the reader to consider the “architectonic picture,” not as a rigid reproduction but as a method of visualizing the self in the world amid all the world’s potentialities, where the physical eye and mind’s eye meet. Architecture, therefore, is not fixed but unpredictable, subject to the individual’s self-perception overlaid with the space and moment they occupy. Paintings by the duo allow us to enter their perception of architecture as both sensual and conceptual. The selected projects from Midtown and Lower Manhattan provide but a small cross section of the varying typologies of differing scales currently enhancing the architecture of New York City. Projects such as the Moynihan Train Hall by Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM) endeavor to preserve the fabric of the city while addressing the increased need for transportation hubs by the expansion of Pennsylvania station to the adjacent historic James A. Farley Building, while adaptive reuse projects such as
Gansevoort Peninsula Park by nArchitects are part of a decadeslong effort to transform the industrial waterfront into much needed green spaces and sports facilities. Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) addresses the shortage of residential space with projects that integrate the materiality of the building to its context and incorporate the human scale with the urban one. Amid the massive developments taking place, smaller practices such as Worrell Yeung and WORKac seek to preserve urban character, through surgical intervention in their renovation projects.　 (a+u)

Essay:
Beyond Buildings: Four Decades of City-Making on
Manhattan’s West Side
Keith P. Beyond his built work, his discourse has also drawn wide attention. This issue highlights projects related to art.
Regardless of its intended function, Aoki’s architecture remains open to diverse uses and invites relationships that have yet to be fully seen or defined. It stands apart from both any perceived homogeneity of contemporary society and insistence on a singular personal message. Instead, it embraces ambiguity and contradictions, allowing for the coexistence of differing values and rhythms that each individual brings to the experience of art. Nor is his design process a straightforward path toward a fixed concept. Rather, it is shaped by a desire to reach an unseen world – free from assumptions and conventions – through collaboration with people of different backgrounds, generations, and professions. Aoki suggests that this approach is most evident in the “Museum,” where elements that emerge from everyday life accumulate into culture, eventually giving rise to the museum itself.
The projects featured in this issue include public art museums, galleries, exhibition designs, and artworks. Each one transforms into a unique spatial experience depending on the art it hosts, the people who visit, and its moment in time. These 25 projects, expansive in their possibilities, embrace the fluidity of such encounters. Presented alongside newly written essays and commentary by Aoki himself, this issue aims to offer a glimpse of potential of Architecture to suggest a freer future. Each of the spaces presented not only provides a space for worship, but also conveys innovative architectural approaches to express sacredness. Projects such as Bagsværd Church by Jørn Utzon align humanity with nature, whereas a project such as Seema Malaka by Geoffery Bawa draws on traditional architectural language to create connections to both nature and culture. In addition to the retrospective, this issue contrasts various ways a work of architecture can nurture a relationship with a higher force, from Lina Bo Bardi’s community-oriented Church of the Holy Spirit of Cerrado, to the more introverted and quiet sensibility seen in Christian Kerez’s Oberrealta Chapel. Finally, this issue extends the architectural archive by highlighting new spaces of contemplation, such as Cobar Sound Chapel by Glenn Murcutt and Motorway Chapel by Herzog & de Meuron, projects that reflect the significance of sound as well as vision in the human experience. Instead of considering humans and buildings as enclosed entities that divide territory into discrete and separable units of space, transspecies architecture counters unilateral anthropocentric thinking by imagining architecture as a gathering of heterogenous entities, from the microbes in concrete to pulmonary alveoli, with permeable layers and varying scales in between. This issue of a+u brings together architects from across the globe – Mireia Luzárraga and Alejandro Muiño (TAKK) from Spain and Mio Tsuneyama (Studio mnm) and Fuminori Nousaku (Fuminori Nousaku Architects) in Japan – to further this critical dialogue into the post-anthropocentric era. Taking examples from religious works of architecture in different parts of the globe, such as Saint Pius Church in Switzerland and Bait Ur Rouf mosque in Bangladesh, this issue endeavors to establish a language of light and shadow, materiality, and scale. The notion of “sacred space” is further complicated by the introduction of AI. Guest editor Erwin Viray, using the theme of “sacred space,” introduces generative AI tools that not only illuminate the direction that architectural design may take, but also confront human sensibilities and shared ideas about architectural space. Continuing this exploration, 14 nonreligious projects, such as Luis Barragán’s Barragán House, Álvaro Siza’s Tidal Pools of Leça da Palmeira, and Anne Holtrop’s Pearl Museum, ponder how this sense of sacredness, feelings of awe and serenity, can be introduced into our everyday lives. Spanning 304 pages and featuring around 380 projects, this book introduces Nikken Sekkei’s ideas in an encyclopedic format. With over 3,000 members including its affiliated groups, Nikken Sekkei launched this project by exploring its design strategies. Rather than consolidating all ideas into a single, overarching strategy and discarding the rest, the focus here is on gathering unique ideas and unformed architectural concepts from each individual. These ideas were collected and categorized as NIKKEN DESIGN GOALS (NDG). The approximately 380 projects showcased in this collection reflect Nikken Sekkei’s commitment to addressing societal challenges through architecture, while also revealing the firm’s current limitations. By presenting these realities openly, this collection also aims to encourage future collaboration with external partners. It represents Nikken Sekkei’s approach to broad design, where all members—not only those in architectural design—engage in creative practice. Drawn from 6 Nordic countries, the 19 projects presented in this issue explore diverse pursuits, from the rehabilitation of industrial ports into lively urban centers, to questions of accessibility and the extension of habitable space onto and into bodies of water. Projects such as Lonna Sauna and Bademaschinen continue historical practices of bathing and sauna found in the region, while urban-scale developments such as Nordhavn take on the challenge of designing for a future marked by climate change and rising sea levels. With a focus on the Nordic region, this issue highlights architectural strategies for maintaining – and enhancing – our relationship to the natural environment. With offices in Genoa and Paris, RPBW is skilled in building in historic cities such as London, Istanbul, and New York. Yet their analytical approach, which centers the human experience by demonstrating an awareness of history, culture, and climate, produces architecture that is either in harmony or in tension with its surroundings, depending on the unique parameters of the site. The solarpunk spirit that has distinguished RPBW over the years comes through in smaller humanist projects such as the Children’s Surgical Hospital in Uganda, which combines local techniques of rammed-earth construction with high-tech photovoltaic panels, but also in buildings of monumental scale, such as the cliff-like Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. This issue of a+u highlights RPBW creative agility by presenting 25 works, including 3 ongoing projects, that encompass principles of structural and visual lightness, environmental integration, and human-centered design. (a+u)

Essay:
RPBW: From Atelier to Building Site
Fulvio Irace

Paddington Square
Pathé Palace
Istanbul Modern
GES–2 House of Culture
Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
CERN Science Gateway Building

Essay:
Renzo Piano Building Workshop: In Search of Common Values 62
Nicolai Ouroussoff

Marunouchi Tokio Marine
New Grands–Montets Ropeway Stations
The Orto Rampante
Children’s Hospice
Children’s Surgical Hospital
Citadel University Campus
Manhattanville Campus Plan
The Forum
Jerome L.
