Now widely-recognized, the mass production of lightweight and pre-fabricated building materials through industrial processes dramatically affected how we use and understand the built environment. A significant portion of the architectural experimentation that coincided with the early development of these processes took place in the United States, during the middle of the 20th Century, in large cities such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.

This special issue features a selection of projects from this period of the American context, that not only have proven to be critical points of reference for ideas on modern architecture but also have remained in some form of use more than half a century after their completion.
